Event Details

'Posthumous Progress' is an ambitious, one off performance event curated by Simon Raven and others at Wollaton Hall & Park, an Elizabethan mansion & national heritage site three miles from Nottingham City Centre.

Professor Lesley Smith, head curator at Tutbury Castle, professional Queen Elizabeth I impersonator and 'Britain's Most Haunted' TV show regular, will join artists Brian Catling, Aaron Williamson, Kirsten Norrie, Jack Catling (UK members of an international performance group 'The Wolf In The Winter') and emerging Nottingham based artists Jenna Finch, Simon Raven, Sian Robinson Davies and Alia Pathan, in the presentation of new works relating to the history and present use of the Hall, considering the figure of the guide in contemporary art.

Wollaton Hall was commissioned and built between 1580 and 1588 for local coal magnate Francis Willoughby, in anticipation of a visit by Queen Elizabeth I, on one of her annual 'court progressions', but the Queen never turned up. Designed by Robert Smythson, Wollaton is unusual for its mirrored architecture - a device specified to ensure equality between guest and living quarters. Now owned by Nottingham City Council, the Hall is home to a Victorian Taxidermy, Natural History and crystal collection, and the grounds have a deer park and lake.

Performances and a talk by Lesley Smith will take place during public opening hours in the Hall and grounds, and a special ticketed evening event will take place in the Hall after hours.

For the evening event audience groups will be ferried to Wollaton from Nottingham City Centre on a free coach service, departing from Sideshow Alley Cafe 5pm prompt. Please note, this booking entitles you to a free place on the coach service to and from Wollaton Hall.  (The event during the day does not require booking.)

Sideshow 2010

In October 2010, Sideshow will take place for the second time round supporting the prestigious British Art Show 7, “In The Days Of The Comet” curated by Lisa Le Feuvre & Tom Morton, for its nationwide launch at Nottingham Contemporary, The New Art Exchange and The Nottingham Castle Museum & Art Gallery.
Sideshow complements Nottingham’s growing artist-led scene and do-it-yourself attitude towards contemporary art and will be made up of both, individual artists projects and selected commissions of new works.
